Grand Piano Sizes: Baby Grand, Parlour Grand and Concert Grand

Kawai Flügel GL-10 - Musik-Ebert Gmbh

Grand piano sizes are measured in centimetres, and that length is far more than a question of space. It governs string length, bass foundation and tonal projection, and so decides whether an instrument belongs in a living room, a music room or on a stage.

This guide sorts the three classic size classes, explains what length means for the sound, and helps you find the right grand piano size for your room.

01The three size classes: baby, parlour and concert grand

Grand pianos fall into roughly three classes by length, measured from the keyboard to the curve at the tail.

The baby grand, at around 150 to 170 cm, is the most compact build and intended for living spaces. The parlour grand sits in the region of about 170 to 200 cm and is considered the tonal all-rounder for larger living and music rooms. Above that begin the semi-concert and concert grands at over 200 cm, which come into their own in halls and on stages.

The boundaries between classes are fluid and drawn differently by each maker. The length ranges, however, remain a reliable guide.

Grand piano sizes at a glance: class, length and suitable room
Size classLength (approx.)Suitable room
Baby grand150–170 cmLiving room, smaller spaces
Parlour grand170–200 cmLarge living room, music room
Semi-concert grand200–225 cmHall, church, auditorium
Concert grandover 225 cmConcert hall, stage

02Why length determines the sound

The decisive factor is bass string length. The longer the bass strings can vibrate, the rounder and richer in overtones the foundation sounds. On very short grands the bass has to be compensated with thicker, more heavily wound strings, which raises the so-called inharmonicity and makes the bass sound less clean.

As a rule of thumb, for a grand to clearly surpass a good upright piano in tone, it should not fall much below 170 cm. Longer instruments also gain projection, meaning carrying power and volume in the room.

Beyond the bass, the soundboard benefits too: a larger grand has more vibrating surface, which helps volume and tonal colour.

03Which size for which room

The right grand piano size is always an interplay of room size, acoustics and tonal ambition. A grand that is too large in a small, reverberant room can overwhelm, while one that is too small in a hall gets lost.

For a classic living room, a baby grand such as the Kawai Flügel GL-10 - schwarz poliert at around 153 cm is a coherent choice: compact in footprint, with the characteristic grand-piano touch. For more space and more bass foundation, the parlour segment offers the most versatile tone. The Kawai Flügel GL-30 at about 166 cm and the larger Kawai Flügel GL-50 at around 188 cm cover the transition from an upscale living room to a dedicated music room.

For large music rooms, halls and stages, semi-concert and concert grands are the answer. An instrument like the Yamaha C7X Flügel schwarz poliert at around 227 cm delivers the projection a concert space needs. A good middle ground for an ambitious private music room is a parlour-to-semi-concert grand such as the Yamaha C3X Flügel - schwarz poliert.

04Volume, footprint and price tiers

With length, three things grow at once: tonal volume, space needed and price. A larger grand is not better across the board; it only realises its potential in the right room. In a small room a parlour or concert grand can simply be too loud and too powerful.

For the footprint, add seating distance and freedom of movement around the instrument to the bare length. Plan generously all around, so that lid and sound can open up freely.

Prices scale with size and build. Compact baby grands start in the five-figure range, parlour grands sit above them, and semi-concert to concert grands form the top tier. Within each class, brand, scale design and finish make the difference. You will find an overview of the available instruments in our Flügel category.

Finding the right grand piano size means matching room and tonal wish. Once you know the available space and the sound you want, you can narrow down the size class deliberately, rather than choosing on length alone.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a baby grand, a parlour grand and a concert grand?
The difference is length. Baby grands measure about 150 to 170 cm and are intended for living spaces, parlour grands sit around 170 to 200 cm and count as the tonal all-rounder, while semi-concert and concert grands are over 200 cm and built for halls and stages.
Which grand piano size fits a living room?
For a classic living room, a baby grand of around 150 to 170 cm is usually the right choice. It offers the grand-piano touch and a full sound with a compact footprint. In larger living rooms a small parlour grand can also fit if the acoustics allow.
Why does a larger grand sound better in the bass?
Because the bass strings can vibrate over a longer length. Longer strings produce a rounder, more overtone-rich bass with less inharmonicity. As a guide, a grand should not fall much below 170 cm to clearly surpass a good upright piano.
Is a larger grand always the better choice?
No. The size should suit the room. A large parlour or concert grand can be too loud and too powerful in a small room. What matters is the interplay of room size, acoustics and tonal ambition.
