A guitar’s scale length is the speaking length of the string and also determines fret spacing. To measure it, measure from the nut to the centre of the 12th fret and double that distance. The string contact point at the bridge can differ because of intonation compensation.
Specific models show why a universal scale-length chart can mislead: even 7/8 guitars vary by maker and model. This guide explains the measurement and gives verifiable manufacturer examples.
| Model | Scale length |
|---|---|
| Yamaha C40 classical guitar | 650 mm |
| Yamaha CS40 classical guitar | 580 mm |
| Yamaha CGS102A classical guitar | 535 mm |
| Alhambra 1 C 7/8 | 636 mm |
| Alhambra 1 C 3/4 | 610 mm |
These figures apply to the models listed and are not a universal size standard.
01What scale length actually is
Scale length describes the freely vibrating length of the string from the nut at the head to the saddle on the top. It is not the whole neck that counts, only this sounding section. The scale length sets where the frets sit: the longer the scale, the wider the frets are spaced.
To find the nominal scale length, double the distance from the nut’s string contact point to the centre of the 12th fret. The 12th fret marks the midpoint. Do not measure to the bridge saddle, which may be offset for intonation compensation.
02What manufacturer figures show
The figures above show differences between specific models, not general standards. Scale length can vary by instrument size even within one brand. Check the manufacturer’s specification for the model you are considering.
There is no single scale length for 7/8 guitars. Alhambra, for example, lists 636 mm for its 1 C 7/8. Check the exact model specifications; this figure does not automatically apply to every 7/8 guitar.
03How scale length affects feel and tone
With the same tuning and string set, a longer scale increases string tension; changing the strings or tuning makes the comparison indirect. Scale length affects feel and fret spacing, but it does not determine tone on its own. Body, construction, strings and playing style also matter.
A shorter scale brings frets closer together and may make some positions easier. Comfort also depends on the neck, string gauge and your technique; scale length alone cannot guarantee a particular feel.

04When a short scale makes sense
The scale length of a 7/8 guitar depends on the model. The Alhambra 1 C Senorita 7/8 is listed at 636 mm; this does not support a tone claim for every 7/8 guitar.
A travel guitar can be useful when a compact instrument matters. The LAG GLA Escapade-GTE is one example. Compare scale length and body size in the manufacturer’s specifications. The guitar range includes instruments in different sizes for smaller hands.

Compare scale length with the guitar you are considering, taking tuning, string set and playing feel into account. Manufacturer specifications support a factual comparison but cannot guarantee a particular tone or level of comfort on their own.
