Steel-string acoustic or classical guitar - for many players the whole start hinges on this question, and both body shapes look similar at first glance. The difference, though, lies exactly where it matters when you play: in the strings, on the neck and in the sound.
This guide explains what really separates the two guitar types, and which one is the better choice for whom - whether campfire pop or classical playing, whether for children's hands or adult beginners.

The most important difference is the strings. The steel-string acoustic is strung with steel strings, the classical guitar with nylon strings. Steel strings are under higher tension and press harder into the fingertips, but in return they sound bright, loud and brilliant. Nylon strings have less pull, can be fretted with far less pressure and sound softer and rounder.
The neck differs too. The classical guitar has a wider, flatter neck - the strings sit further apart, which makes cleanly fretting individual notes easier. The neck of the steel-string acoustic is narrower and slightly rounded on the back, which makes chord changes and shifting the hand more comfortable for many players.
From this come two worlds of sound and two areas of use. The steel-string acoustic is the typical guitar for pop, folk, singer-songwriter and campfire accompaniment - anywhere it needs to be loud and cut through. The classical guitar is the guitar for classical music and flamenco, for quiet practice at home and for a first start, especially with children.
02Steel-string acoustics for beginners
If you are after the bright, loud steel-string sound, the beginner steel-string acoustics offer proven models. The Yamaha F and FS series has been a reliable start for years: solidly built, easy to play and stable in tuning. The F models have the classic, slightly larger acoustic body with a strong bass, the FS models a slightly smaller body that sits more comfortably for smaller players.
These three models represent the typical entry point from around 159 euros - like-for-like in the same beginner class. You will find a larger selection in the Westerngitarren.

03Classical guitars for beginners
If you prefer the soft nylon-string sound - for classical playing, say, or as a first guitar for a child - beginner classical guitars are often the friendlier choice. They are usually cheaper to buy than comparable steel-string acoustics and start with these models from around 89 euros.
When buying for children, watch the size: classical guitars come in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and 4/4 scale. The models shown here are 4/4 (full size) for teenagers and adults; you will find smaller scales in the Konzertgitarren.

04Steel-string acoustic and classical guitar in direct comparison
The following table sums up the differences you can base your decision on.
| Feature | Steel-string acoustic | Classical guitar |
|---|---|---|
| Strings | steel strings, higher tension | nylon strings, softer |
| Neck | narrower, slightly rounded | wider, flatter |
| Sound | bright, loud, brilliant | soft, warm, rounder |
| Genre | pop, folk, campfire | classical, flamenco |
| Ideal for | accompaniment, singer-songwriter | starting out, children, quiet practice |
| Entry price | from ~159 € | from ~89 € |
The decision between a steel-string acoustic and a classical guitar is not a question of better or worse, but of the sound you have in mind and how you use it. Steel strings and a narrow neck for a bright pop sound and accompaniment, nylon strings and a wide neck for a soft classical tone and a gentle start - especially with children. If you are unsure about the strings, the classical guitar as a first instrument is often easier on the fingers.
