Traditional construction with a gourd bottom

The body is made of finely woven natural fibre, closed at the bottom with a calabash disc. This combination of materials is typical of the West African rattle tradition, which travelled to Brazil and became inseparably linked with capoeira. Depending on how it is moved, the caxixi produces either a bright, sharp tone when the contents strike the gourd, or a softer, deeper tone when they hit the woven body.
