The NU1XA features a complex and sophisticated upright piano mechanism that transmits the delicate movements of the keys to the hammer. It responds precisely to the player's subtlest nuances and expressive intentions, including delicate playing techniques such as trills and continuously repeated notes. Furthermore, the keyboard is made of wood, like an acoustic piano, enabling a solid, natural response.
Remarkably detailed expressiveness with the Yamaha Articulation Sensor System
The NU1XA features the newly developed Articulation Sensor System, which uses non-contact electromagnetic sensors and Yamaha's proprietary algorithm to precisely and continuously capture the subtle nuances of the pianist's playing. This system uses two separate sensors on each key: one for the hammer—the most important part of the acoustic piano sound mechanism—and the other for the key itself to precisely measure the finger release movement and articulate the special nuances when the sound ceases. Together, they fully capture the player's finest expressions.
Grandtouch pedals for an even larger playing area
A grand piano's damper pedal responds to the player's foot with slightly different levels of resistance depending on when the pedal is pressed, when it begins to work, and when it is held down. Experienced players typically pedal while feeling these subtle differences in resistance, adding their own subtle variations to the tone and sound. When the pedal is released, the resistance changes differently than when it was pressed. GrandTouchTM pedals feature a pivot structure similar to that of a grand piano, providing the same expressive and familiar feel when depressing the pedal and expanding the playing range.
Resonance that fills the performance space like a grand piano
The moment the hammer strikes the strings, the sound is immediately audible to the performer, and at the same time, the entire instrument resonates, filling the room with magnificent sound. To faithfully reproduce this unique grand piano sound experience, the NU1XA features a new sound system. It incorporates upward-firing woofers that resonate the entire instrument, and tweeters with a newly developed horn structure that resonate with the front and back of the instrument in the high frequencies. Combined with these synergistic resonance effects, the sound quality and sound projection give the player precise, real-time control over the sound while playing. The result is a stunningly realistic, grand piano-like sound that spreads three-dimensionally throughout the performance space.

The NU1XA lets you play the voices of the CFX, Yamaha's top-of-the-line concert grand piano and the first choice in competitions around the world, and the warm tones of the Bösendorfer Imperial grand piano on a single instrument. The NU1XA's rich sonority isn't just based on magnificent piano samples. It also utilizes unique technologies to deliver expressiveness. Grand Expression Modeling technology precisely simulates the complex interplay between player and instrument, reproducing the limitless tonal variety of a grand piano. Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM) faithfully reproduces the extraordinarily complex resonances of a grand piano, created by the resonant vibrations of the strings and soundboard.
Best sound, even with headphones
By using special microphones positioned at the player's position to record piano samples, binaural sampling technology effectively recreates the sensation of hearing an acoustic piano in front of you while playing. This technology was used in both the Yamaha CFX and the Bösendorfer Imperial Voices.
