Yamaha Disklavier Enspire explained: the self-playing piano

Yamaha YUS 1 Klavier - Musik-Ebert Gmbh

An acoustic piano that plays itself, with no one at the keyboard, sounds at first like a parlour trick from another age. The Yamaha Disklavier Enspire is exactly that, only in a modern, precise form: a full acoustic piano with real strings and hammers that can reproduce a recorded performance note for note.

This guide explains how a self-playing piano of this kind works, what the Disklavier Enspire shares with the Silent system and in which living situations it shows its charm.

01What a self-playing piano really is

The key point first: a Disklavier Enspire is not a speaker shaped like a piano, nor a digital piano in a piano cabinet. It is a complete acoustic piano with real strings, a real soundboard and a real hammer action. You can sit down and play it exactly as you would any acoustic piano.

What is added is the ability to play itself. Beneath the keys sit small electromagnets called solenoids, which move the keys from below precisely as a pianist would. A second set of magnets controls the pedals. When a recording plays back, these magnets press the real keys, the real hammers strike the real strings, and an acoustic piano tone fills the room as though a live player were present.

02How recording and playback work

During recording, sensors on the keys, hammers and pedals capture every movement and turn it into data. Not only the notes are recorded, but also the striking force of each individual key and the exact depth to which a pedal is pressed. The dynamics of a performance are preserved this way, the soft and the loud, the accelerating and the holding back.

On playback the process runs in reverse: the stored data drives the solenoids, which move the keys with exactly the recorded force and order. The current Enspire is controlled wirelessly through an app on a smartphone or tablet, with no visible control box on the piano any more. Through the app you choose pieces, set the volume and start playback.

03Disklavier and Silent: two functions, one piano

Many Enspire models, including our Yamaha YUS 1 Klavier schwarz poliert ENST PE Disklavier Enspire Silent, combine the self-playing Disklavier with the Yamaha Silent system. Both use the same sensors but solve opposite tasks.

With the Disklavier the piano plays itself and sounds acoustically into the room. With Silent play it is the other way around: a stop rail catches the hammers just before the strings so that no acoustic tone is produced, while optical sensors read the touch and deliver a digital sound through headphones. So the instrument stays a normal acoustic piano during the day, one that plays itself on request, and becomes a silent practice instrument in the evening. To go deeper into the Silent technology, see our article on Silent and TransAcoustic pianos.

04Who the Disklavier Enspire is for

The Disklavier Enspire appeals to several very different people. In the living room it becomes an atmospheric home concert, reproducing real pianists on real strings without anyone being present. For learners it is a tool that records their own practice note for note for a critical listen, and that supplies accompaniment pieces to play along with. Those who love immersing themselves in piano music use the built-in pieces and streaming channels as an endless piano library.

Anyone who only wants to practise quietly and does not value the self-playing element is better served by a pure Silent piano such as the Yamaha YUS 1 Klavier schwarz poliert mit SH3 Silent System. And anyone looking for a real piano action without strings or tuning should look at our guide to hybrid pianos. The full selection of new instruments is in the Klaviere - Neu category.

The Disklavier Enspire is a class of its own: a genuine acoustic piano that can play itself and can be used silently for practice when needed. Anyone wanting to combine both, the open home concert by day and the quiet study by evening, finds here an instrument that unites both worlds in a single body.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Disklavier a real acoustic piano?
Yes. The Disklavier Enspire is a full acoustic piano with strings, soundboard and hammer action. You can play it by hand exactly as you would any acoustic piano. The self-playing system is added on top and moves the real keys with magnets.
How does the piano play itself?
Beneath the keys sit electromagnets called solenoids. They press the keys with the recorded force and order, so that the real hammers strike the real strings. Pedal movements are reproduced as well.
Can I also practise quietly with a Disklavier?
Yes, if the model also has a Silent system, like our YUS 1 Enspire. A rail then catches the hammers before the strings and you hear the sound through headphones, with nothing sounding into the room.
How does a Disklavier differ from a hybrid piano?
A Disklavier is an acoustic piano with strings that can play itself. A hybrid piano has a real piano action but no strings and produces its sound digitally. The Disklavier sounds acoustic, the hybrid digital.
Does a Disklavier stay in tune?
It has real strings and therefore needs regular tuning like any acoustic piano. The self-playing and Silent systems change nothing about that, because the acoustic part stays unchanged.
