Die „Goldberg“-Variationen sind zweifellos der bedeutendste Klavierzyklus des 18. Jahrhunderts. In ihrer überragenden Bedeutung können ihnen nur noch Beethovens „Diabelli“-Variationen aus dem 19. Jahrhundert an die Seite gestellt werden. Bachs eigene Handschrift ist zwar nicht überliefert, sehr wohl aber der von ihm korrigierte Erstdruck der „Aria mit verschiedenen Veraenderungen vors Clavicimbal mit 2 Manualen“ (so dort der Titel). Diese Erstausgabe liegt unserer Edition als Hauptquelle zugrunde, zusätzlich wurde der Notentext mit weiteren Quellen verglichen, so zum Beispiel mit Bachs eigenhändigem Eintrag der „Aria“ (dort noch nicht als solche bezeichnet) in das Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena.
